KSPC to approach Karnataka govt to mandate biometric pharma cards to monitor presence of pharmacists at chemist outlets

Karnataka State Pharmacy Council (KSPC) will soon approach the state government to mandate a biometric pharma card to monitor presence of pharmacists at chemist outlets. The Council is discussing with the government to identify a private agency for development of a software to print 50,000 biometric pharma cards to begin with.
Earlier in 2013, the Council had sent in a proposal to the National Informatics Centre (NIC) to help in its software development for the pharma card. But since NIC had not yet consented to the same, we are working to ensure that the Karnataka government will provide the required assistance, KSPC president DA Gundu Rao told Pharmabiz.
“Biometric pharma cards are the way forward for the pharmacy profession. We are confident that the government will now help to identify a private player and call for quotations. This card will transform the functioning of pharmacies in the state. Moreover, Karnataka would be first state in the country to implement the same. This card which is used for authentication of identity would strengthen the pharmacy profession with enhanced productivity and recognition in service,” he added.
Mandating the need for a biometric pharma card, former Karnataka Drugs Controller Dr. BR Jagashetty stated that the chemist outlets would need only a digitized electronic compact machine with a dedicated built-in software to make the pharma card operational.
During his reign as the Karnataka drugs controller between 2008 to 2013, Dr. Jagashetty had discussed the need for biometric pharma card with Dr. B Suresh, president, Pharmacy Council of India. Then he insisted that the KSPC should work towards its implementation.
The concept of pharma card is obligatory in the US. For fresh pharmacy graduates, the card would enable working at chemist outlets which is the best platform to chart their career path. It would not only make them systematic in stocking and tracking drugs on the shelves and sales but enable them to retain information about the medicine uses and contents. It could also widen employment scope for the qualified pharmacy personnel serving the private sector and academia professionals, he said.
“The pharma card holders would be able to work part-time at chemists shops. It would also offset the current situation having to man an outlet for the entire day. Moreover, it would provide the option of hourly service and movement from shop-to-shop depending on the pharmacist’s convenience. Since there is no provision under the Drugs & Cosmetic Act & Rules mandating that a pharmacist should work only at one designated outlet, it would provide the card holder to function at chemist shops anywhere in the state,” said Dr. Jagashetty who is at present VP, Legal & Compliance,Medlife.com.
Other advantages of the biometric pharma card are a professional identity and recognition by the public on the presence of a qualified pharmacist at the chemist assuring that right medication is dispensed, said Dr. Jagashetty, former National Adviser (Drugs Control) to MoHFW, GOI.
The Council has been working relentlessly with the NIC for the creation of the biometric pharma card and now we are convinced that the Karnataka government enables its speedy implementation, noted Rao.

Humans fart at a speed of 9.5 km per hour. Find out this and many more weird facts about your own body?

Human body is the greatest of mysterious objects in the earth. In this blog I will be sharing some weird facts about the human body. I bet you have probably never heard of these facts.
1. Length of circulatory system
The total length of our circulatory system stretches to an amazing 60,000 miles. That is more than twice the distance around the Earth. The central nervous system is connected to every part of the body by 43 pairs of nerves.
2. Sneezing Speed Can you believe that you sneeze at  speeds of 100 miles per hour or more? Yeah but its true. This gives you a valid point to cover your mouth and prevent someone from being attacked of microbes at a speed of 100 miles per hour.
3. Fart A typical fart is composed of about 59% nitrogen, 21% hydrogen, 9% carbon dioxide, 7% methane and 4%oxygen. Only about 1% of a fart contains hydrogen sulphide gas and mercaptan, which contain sulphur, and the sulphur is what makes your fart to stink. The average human farts 14 times a day which is enough to fill a medium sized balloon. Humans farts at an average speed of 9.5 km per hour. Even dead bodies of human can fart for 3 hours after death. Unbelievable but true that women's farts smells worse than men's farts. But dear men ,don't be complacent enough because you fart more often than women. Tighter anus means louder farts. Intensity of farts can be found by looking at asses. Tighter ass gives louder farts.
4. Kidneys The length of nephrons in both kidneys when placed end to end horizontally  will cover a distance of 16 kilometres. Kidneys pump around 400 gallons of recycled blood everyday.
5.Brain Your brain contains about 100 billion neurons which would take you over 3,000 years to count them all. Whenever you dream, laugh, think, see, or move, it’s all because of these  tiny neuron transmitting signals. Neurons send info to your brain at more than 150 miles (241 kilometres) per hour. When a bee lands on your bare foot, Sensory neurons in your skin relay this information to your spinal cord and brain at a speed of more than 150 miles (241 kilometres) per hour. Your brain then uses motor neurons to transmit the message back through your spinal cord to your foot to shake the bee off quickly. Motor neurons can relay this information at more than 200 miles (322 kilometres) per hour.
6. Intestines In humans, the small intestine is about 6 metres or 20 feet long and the large intestine is 1.5 metres or 5 feet long
7. Nails Nails of Men tends to grow faster than the nails of  women. The growth of nails is faster in summer than in winters. Women’s nail grow much faster than anyone during pregnancy.
8. Hairs The density of human hair per square inch is even more than that of chimpanzees and apes. This may sound strange as none of us wants to look hairy but if you look through a magnifying glass you can see a lot of hairy pores in your skin.
9. Body odour The human body has 50 thousand sweat glands that can produce up to one litre of sweat a day and release harmful toxins.  The groin and the armpits are the areas that produce the majority of odour. East Asians (Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese) have fewer apocrine sweat glands compared to people of other descent, and the lack of these glands make East Asians less prone to body odour.
10. Bones There are 206 bones in human body if which  27 bones found in each hand. Femur (Thigh Bone) is the longest bone. Ankle bone is the most breakable bone. It can break even while running. Evel Knievel , the pioneer of motorcycle long jumping exhibitions, had suffered 433 bone fractures by end of 1975. In the winter of 1976 he was seriously injured during a televised attempt to jump a tank full of sharks at the Chicago amphitheatre. He decided to retire from major performances as a result.

Everything you need to know about VIAGRA

Viagra, commonly known as the little blue pill, was launched by Pfizer, a globally leading pharmaceutical company. Viagra, comes with several trade names and is a medication used to treat erectile dysfunction .Since that time, Viagra has become a global success story, with annual sales exceeding a staggering 1 billion dollars yearly. In this blog, I am going to share some interesting acts about Viagra.

1.Scientifically known as sildenafil citrate and sold as a prescription-only drug, Viagra acts by blocking the enzyme, cyclic GMP, which prevents erection in males.

2.Invention of Viagra is one of the most unusual inventions of the last century that made revolutionary changes in medicine .Viagra was originally developed to treat heart disease and it was only during clinical trials that its penile erection effects were observed.  Some men who tried the medicine said about the unusual side effect of the drug. This is how new analysis for penile erection was launched by the company and a little blue pill was eventually devised.

3.Viagra is also informally known as "vitamin V", "the blue pill", or "blue diamond", as well as various other nicknames.

4.Most common misconception about Viagra is that ,it is an aphrodisiac but it is not so. In fact, it has little effect when used by those not suffering from erectile dysfunction. In one study, a 25-mg dose was shown to cause no significant change in erectile quality, but did reduce the post-ejaculatory refractory time.

5.The 2007  Nobel Prize in Aviation went to Patricia V. Agostino, Santiago A. Plano, and Diego A. Golombek of Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, Argentina, for their discovery that sildenafil helps treat jet lag recovery in hamsters. Don’t know Jet lag?? Well ,Jet Lag is disturbance in circadian rhythm of the body in long flights or long travels where the time zone is different. hamsters are experimental rodents.

6.Common side effects of Sildenafil include headaches and heartburn, as well as flushed skin. Caution is advised for those who have cardiovascular diseases. Rare but serious side effects include prolonged erections, which can lead to damage to the penis, and sudden-onset hearing loss. Sildenafil should not be taken by people who take nitrates such as nitroglycerin  (GTN), as this may result in a severe and potentially fatal drop in blood pressure. Some sildenafil users have complained of seeing everything tinted blue (cyanopsia). Some complained of blurriness and loss of peripheral vision. In July 2005, the FDA found that sildenafil could lead to vision impairment in rare cases and a number of studies have linked sildenafil use with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy.

7.Viagra is one of  the most counterfeited drugs in the world. There is a high demand for erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra. But the prices or Viagra are very high. Not everyone can afford it. This presents an excellent opportunity for fake drug manufacturers to launch fake versions of Viagra and sell them cheaply. Always Make sure you get your Viagra through the correct channels and from a reputable source so that you don’t end up with counterfeit Viagra.

8.Viagra Makes Flowers Stand Up straight. In an study, It appears Viagra is good not only for treating male impotence but it can also keep flowers fresh. Israeli and Australian researchers have discovered that small concentrations of the drug dissolved in a vase of water can also double the shelf life of cut flowers, making them stand up straight for as long as a week beyond their natural life span.

9.The discovery of Viagra and its wondrous ability to cure erectile dysfunction is saving endangered species as many men switch from using animal parts to treat the condition. In places like China, Viagra is replacing traditional medicines including potions made from rhinos horn, tiger bones, seal penises and reindeer antler velvet which is good news for these animals.

10.In the war in Afghanistan, CIA agents would exchange Viagra for information about the Taliban with tribal chiefs. These ageing warlords often had much younger wives or more than one wife to satisfy. The CIA has secured co-operation from ageing Afghan warlords by providing them with an unusual incentive – Viagra. This miraculous use of Viagra was revealed by  one of veteran CIA officer to The Washington Post.

11.Underweight babies need more intensive care and Viagra can deliver it to them providing sustain for inhaled nitric oxide therapy. The treatment is rejected as medical experts beware of complications but the similar experiment still took place in Australia. The infants were out of intensive care unit four times faster when Viagra was given to them.

Chennai: As the crackdown on quacks continued in Tiruvallur, more skeletons came tumbling out after officials caught a 'physiotherapist' prescribing drugs and a doctor-couple using an illegal machine to conduct ultrasound in the district on Thursday.

For the past three weeks, public health officials had been conducting inspections at clinics across Tiruvallur in the wake of an outbreak of a mix of viral and bacterial infections in some pockets.

On Thursday, officials nabbed a 35-year-old man, who claimed to be a physiotherapist, for prescribing drugs and administering injections, fromMadharapakkam in Gummidipoondi. The man, identified as Nasser, had been practising for close to a month.

"When we questioned him, he said he was hired by a qualified doctor," said D Mohanan, joint health director of health, Tiruvallur.

In the same village, officials caught a doctor-couple with an unregistered scanning machine under the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, which bans prenatal sex determination. The couple will be called in for questioning on Friday.
Since the beginning of August, around 21 quacks were caught by public health officials in the district, most of whom are now out on bail.

At least six of the eight children who died of various infections in the district in the past one month are believed to have visited quacks before they sought help from qualified practitioners.

Painkillers turning poison pills

New Delhi: NSAIDS, or the common painkillers, are not advisable for dengue patients because they are known to quicken internal bleeding. However, doctors have been prescribing them to relieve joint pain in suspected or confirmed cases of chikungunya. Now, in a worrying trend, these drugs have been found to be counterproductive even in chikungunya patients.
Doctors in Safdarjung Hospital, Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), Max Hospital, Saket, and in other medical institutions narrated to TOI instances of chikungunya patients suffering kidney and liver damage to the extent that they needed dialysis and ICU care, respectively.
"We got at least 50 elderly patients with compromised kidney function after suffering from chikungunya. We observed that taking too many painkillers contributed to complications," said Dr Anup Kumar, professor and head of the department of urology and renal transplant, Safdarjung Hospital.
Dr Dinesh Khullar, chairman, department of nephrology and kidney transplant medicine, Max Saket, too reported around five such cases in his hospital. "We managed most of them with conservative treatment and temporary dialysis," he said.
At BLK Super-Specialty Hospital, Dr Sunil Prakash, who head the nephrology unit, added, "We have one patient with viral illness, not confirmed positive for chikungunya, who is on dialysis because of renal failure."
According to Khullar, chikungunya infection has never been associated directly with renal failure, so this new trend is worrying. "Mutation of the virus could be a factor, but our suggestion is that patients pre-disposed to kidney disease stop taking painkillers and keep a close watch on urine output. Decreased urine output is a sign of kidney malfunction," he said.
Viral infections are known to cause high fever, dehydration, capillary leak and low blood pressure. "NSAIDS complicate the situation by blocking the glands that regulate blood flow to the kidneys when they need it the most," explained Max's nephrology head.
Maintaining hydration is important for chikungunya management. But doctors advise patients who are predisposed to kidney diseases to avoid coconut water since it contains potassium that may contribute to organ damage.
Liver damage due to extensive use of painkiller is also being reported among chikungunya and dengue patients. "One patient who tested positive for chikungunya went into liver failure. But we managed to save him," a senior doctor at ILBS told TOI.
Dr Subhash Gupta, liver transplant surgeon, confirmed a similar experience with a dengue patient. "Liver toxicity due to painkiller drugs in chikungunya cases is rare but it can happen," he said. "One should be careful. If those drugs are a must to control pain, physicians should also advise regular liver function test to pre-empt organ damage."
